Cleveland schools drop Flock Security amid cost, privacy debate
The district cited privacy issues and costs exceeding $600,000 annually as factors in suspending the security camera system used since 2023. Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) has decided not to extend its Flock Safety contract and has suspended the use of the company's security cameras on school property. The decision was made following a review of the district's exterior security, which included privacy concerns raised by city residents and board members. A group called Flock No urged the district to abandon the use, highlighting instances where Flock cameras were used for immigration-related searches despite city policies. The cost of Flock, which costs over $600,000 annually, was also cited as a factor in the district’s decision. The district had used the cameras since 2023, receiving nearly $1.3 million through a state grant to install Flock devices and use for two years.
