CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities prevented two passengers from taking guns onto planes at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport over the weekend.

The first incident happened Friday. A firearm was detected inside a person’s carry-on bag during routine screening. Transportation Security Administration officers notified Cleveland police, who seized the unloaded weapon.

On Sunday, a passenger stepped up for an X-ray screening when a TSA officer noticed the firearm in a carry-on bag. Cleveland police responded and confiscated the weapon, which was loaded at the time.

Both passengers told officers that they were unaware the weapons were in their bags.

“As summer travel picks up and we continue to see elevated passenger volumes, incidents like this one can have a serious effect on our operations,” said Don Barker, TSA’s federal security director in Ohio. “Bringing a firearm to a security checkpoint not only slows down the individuals in that lane, but it slows everyone in line behind them down and is a security and safety concern.”

The guns are among 15 that TSA has seized this year at Hopkins.

Last year, 38 firearms were detected at the airport. During the first quarter of last year, more than 1,500 firearms were seized at airport checkpoints across the country.

Penalties for bringing a firearm to the airport checkpoint can reach as high as $14,950. TSA determines the amount based on specific circumstances. TSA can revoke PreCheck eligibility for at least five years for passengers caught with a firearm at checkpoints.

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if the weapons are unloaded. Ammunition must be packed separately in a locked hardback case.
