James Coy Johnson faces charges including first-degree murder in the death of his wife Debbie Johnson.

On May 30, deputies responded to a home on County Road 312 near Sweetwater after she did not show up to work that day. She was found dead on the front porch from an apparent gunshot wound.

McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said in a release that neighbors indicated hearing a gunshot followed by Mr. Johnson leaving the residence. Guy said no report of a shooting was made because neighbors said it was a common occurrence at the home.

License plate readers indicated that Johnson had traveled to Georgia. He was apprehended on June 4 by police in the city of West Point on charges including driving under the influence.

According to the release, Johnson was arrested in 2023 on charges of assault and resisting arrest after a domestic incident involving his wife at the home. He pled guilty to the assault and placed on two years of probation.

“Tragic domestic violence incidents like this affect every community,” added Detective Sgt. Jared Price. “We hope that anyone affected by or is a victim of domestic abuse will reach out to local law enforcement for assistance or referral or support agencies.”
