Waiting for tax refund? Find when your money will arrive with online tracker

You can use the IRS Where's My Refund tool to quickly check if your tax return has been processed and when you should get your refund money. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched an online tracker to help taxpayers track their income tax refunds. The Where's My Refund? tool allows users to update on the status of their return and an estimated date on when they'll receive their money. The tool includes basic information such as Social Security Number, tax year, filing status, and refund amount. The IRS updates its data so information can be available quickly if you filed electronically. However, many factors such as the earlier you file, the better process, including digital returns being processed more quickly than paper returns. If you filed by March 11, your refund could be directly deposited by early April.

WASHINGTON – At this time of year, millions of Americans are doing the same thing: Waiting and wondering when the IRS will send them their income tax refunds.

If you use the Where’s My Refund? tool, you can track the Internal Revenue Service’s progress online, much the same way you can track delivery of a package from Amazon, UPS or Federal Express.

With the tool you can get an update on the status of your return and an estimated date on when you’ll get your money.

Once you enter some basic information -- your Social Security Number, tax year, filing status and the refund amount as shown on your tax return -- you’ll be able to follow progress on your refund.

The IRS updates its data, so information can be available quickly if you filed electronically. Here’s some expected wait times for information in the tracker:

• None 3 or 4 days after e-filing a tax year 2022 or 2021 return.

• None 4 weeks or more after mailing a return.

If someone doesn’t have internet access, they can call the automated refund hotline at 800-829-1954 for information about a current-year refund or 866-464-2050 for an amended return.

The IRS says it processes about nine out of 10 tax returns within 21 business days.

If you filed electronically and the IRS began processing your return by March 11, you could expect your refund to be directly deposited by early in April.

But many factors affect how long it takes to process your return. In general, the earlier you file, the better.

Filing electronically speeds things up. Digital returns can be processed more quickly than paper returns. The IRS estimates it takes four weeks or more to process a return filed by mail.

Allowing for direct deposit can also speed up how quickly you get your money.

And if you requested a paper check, rather than direct deposit, that also can slow the process.
